Crate Training Your Puppy
Crate training your puppy may be easier than you think and it has a lot of advantages. You may be thinking there is no technique for crate training a barking puppy. The good news is you can train your puppy to stay in a crate even if he does bark.
It takes a little time and a ton of patience but, once you have successfully trained him you will reap the rewards. Once puppies or even adult dogs get used to their crate they will love it. They actually like to have a place of their own when they want sleep, be to themselves or they just want to feel safe.
Crate training your puppy will also be easier for you as the owner. You can kennel them you are gone for the day, go to bed at night or to even take them on a trip. This way you don’t have to worry about them getting into things when your not around.
You may be asking, how early should you start crate training a puppy? The answer is, as soon as you bring your puppy home. If your puppy is old enough to be away form it’s mother than it is old enough to be in a dog kennel. It may take a little getting use to but, soon your puppy will feel safe and not mind being in there. Our dog Oscar even opens his kennel door and goes in a lays down during the day. He also knows when we are leaving and get in it and waits until we lock his door.
Puppy crate training is easy. The first thing to do of course is to buy a dog crate. You want to make sure it’s the correct size for your dog. Your dog should be able to stand up, lay down and turn around comfortably it in. Buying one that is to big for him will allow him to go to the bathroom in it.
After you purchase the correct size crate you will be ready for the next step. You want to first teach your pup to go into the crate on his own. The best way to do this is to get either his favorite toy or puppy treat and lure him in. After he has accomplished this step and is comfortable being in it, you are ready to close the door. After you close the door leave the room to see how he does alone. Just make sure that he has something in the crate with him.
A general rule to remember to is that however many months old your puppy is you can expect him to hold his waste for a half and hour. This means that if your pup is 10 weeks old he is not going to be able to hold his waste for 8 hours. Don’t get discouraged when he has accidents in his crate. Be sure to let him outside to go the bathroom before you put him in his crate.
Learning how to crate train a puppy is very easy. Just remember to use positive training when teaching him to use his kennel. Make sure you don’t use the crate as a place for punishment. This will make it more difficult to train him and he could lose trust in you. Always praise your dog for good behavior and doing what you ask him to do. For complete puppy crate training click here.
